Bob Day and John Smith attended Gilles Plains High School together in the mid 1960s. They met up again in 1973 and in 1975 launched the Day-Smith empire with no money but a lot of enthusiasm. The ensuing years were spent in the building industry, on site as both plumbers and supervisors. In 1983 they incorporated their own building company, Homestead Constructions Pty Ltd.
In 1988 the company's name was changed to Homestead Award Winning Homes to reflect the company's achievements and objectives. In 1996, a parent company, Home Australia Pty Ltd was formed, and this now provides the banner under which the various companies operate nationally.
Homestead Homes built its first home in 1979 and in 1983 built its first display home. By 1989 Homestead Homes was the State's largest homebuilder with sales approaching 1,000 new homes per year and a turnover in excess of $50m p.a. The company has been a consistent winner in the Homes of the Year Awards and has been acclaimed as the market leader in the homebuilding industry in South Australia.
